Um bill (PL 1250 / 24), that is in progress at the Câmara dos Deputados, intends to make the revitalization programs for the São Francisco and Parnaíba rivers include the construction of small power plants solar energy photovoltaic system developed by communities in regions of the Brazilian semi-arid region.  

O text aims to change the 14.182 Law/21, the same one that determined the privatization of Eletrobras e conditioned privatization on the financing revitalization programs in river basins.

Federal deputy Murilo Galdino (Republicanos-PB), author of the bill, wants part of these resources also finance solar energy units in semi-arid communities. 

A measure, according to the parliamentarian, it would reduce deforestation and allow access to solar energy for small consumers. “The use of solar energy in this region will contribute to the preservation of these basins, which is why we request for its approval”, he highlighted. 

According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the The national semi-arid region is made up of 1 municipalities in 477 states, being Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

Next Steps

O PL 1250/24 will be analyzed conclusively in the Environment and Sustainable Development committees; Mines and Energy; Finance and Taxation; and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship of Câmara dos Deputados. To become law, the The text will also have to be approved by the Senate.
