Solar has best year in Brazil, with R$54,9 billion in investments

Contributions made at the source grew more than 30% last year compared to 2023, points out ABSOLAR

A survey carried out by ABSOLAR (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy) reveals that the Brazilian solar sector attracted more than R$54,9 billion in new investments in 2024, adding up the big plants and the systems distributed micro and minigeneration

The result represents a 30% growth in relation to the accumulated investments in the country in 2023. Since 2012, the photovoltaic solar sector has brought more than R$239 billion in total investments to Brazil.

According to the entity, last year the solar sector also generated more than 429 thousand new green jobs throughout the country. Since 2012, the photovoltaic source has already created more than 1,5 million new jobs in Brazil.

In of installed capacity, solar energy added 14,3 GW to the Brazilian electricity grid last year, with 8,7 GW from distributed generation and 5,7 GW from centralized generation.

Since 2012, there are already 52,2 GW of operational power, with 35 GW of distributed generation and 17,2 GW of centralized generation.

These 52,2 GW of accumulated power from solar sources in Brazil represent 21,3% of the installed power of the national electricity grid, positioning the source as the second largest source in the country, behind only hydroelectric plants.

Centralized and distributed generation

Currently, large solar plants operate in 26 Brazilian states, in all regions of the country. Accumulated investments in this segment exceed R$73,9 billion since 2012, with revenues to the public coffers exceeding R$24,4 billion.

In the distributed generation segment, in the same period, there were more than R$165 billion in investments, in addition to R$49,6 billion in tax collection and more than 1 million accumulated jobs.

In total, the modality is present in the five regions of Brazil, with more than 3,1 million systems connected to the network, bringing savings and sustainability to more than 4,6 million UCs (consumer units).

perspectives

For the President of the Board of Directors of ABSOLAR, Ronaldo Koloszuk, the solar source is currently one of the main vectors to accelerate the decarbonization of Brazil.

“Although it has made progress in recent years, the country – which has one of the best solar resources on the planet – remains far below its solar potential (…) Currently, less than 5% (of consumers) use the sun to generate electricity. For comparison, in Australia, this number exceeds 33%,” he said.

Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR, adds that, for this reason, the photovoltaic source has an increasingly strategic role in Brazil to help the country's social, economic and environmental development.

“Photovoltaic solar energy reduces the population’s electricity costs, increases the competitiveness of companies and relieves the government’s budget, benefiting small, medium and large consumers in the country,” he commented.
