Solar energy should present favorable generation conditions in February

Even with rainfall records, sunshine will be enough to leave radiation above average in much of the country.

The month of February will present favorable conditions for consumers who have photovoltaic systems, with solar radiation remaining above average in much of Brazil.

This is because, according to an analysis by the consultancy Tempo OK, the month of February should be marked by atmospheric circulation that makes it difficult for persistent cloudiness to form, also leading to the predominance of heat and higher than usual temperatures.

Paulo Lombardi, the company's meteorologist, explains that in this first week of the month the action of a humidity corridor that crosses Brazil will keep the clouds heavy, mainly in the Southeast, the Center-West and most of the North region.

However, he points out that if the current atmospheric configuration were the same for most of the month, there could be some harm to solar energy generation. However, this will not be the reality for most days in February.

“The humidity corridor, which formed on the last day of January, should start to change shape from next Wednesday (5), leaving the atmosphere freer of persistent cloudiness, especially in the Southeast and Central West regions”, explains the professional.

As a result, the rainfall recorded in these regions should migrate to the South, west of South America and the extreme north of Brazil, and the typical summer characteristics (predominance of sun, high temperatures and possible rain showers in the afternoon) will favor the incidence of solar radiation on photovoltaic s.

“In the second week of February, an area of anomalous high pressure in the middle levels of the atmosphere and the displacement of a VCAN (Upper Level Cyclonic Vortex) towards the interior of Brazil should guarantee a more stable weather condition and solar irradiance will be more favored in the center-north of the country. This condition will remain at least until around the 20th”, she said.

In general, even with rain forecast for the South of Brazil, the openings of sun will be enough to leave solar radiation above approximately 3 to 5% above normal in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.  In the north of Paraná and in most of the Southeast and Center-West, irradiance exceeds the average by between 1% and 5%.

Particularly noteworthy is Espírito Santo, the north of Minas Gerais and the interior of the Northeast, where irradiation values may exceed 10% above normal for the month, even though the forecast indicates a return of heavier rainfall to these areas in the last week of February.

However, in the Northeast, areas of the north coast should be harmed by the action of the northern edge of the VCAN, where cloud formation is favored, and the ZCIT (Intertropical Convergence Zone), which will be closer to the continent, maintaining high humidity and persistent cloudiness throughout the month.
