An interministerial pact signed this week will aim to promote sustainable irrigation initiatives aimed at family farming.
The project aims to implement photovoltaic plants for irrigation systems located in regions where access to electricity is insufficient or precarious.
The partnership encomes the Ministries of Mines and Energy; Integration and Regional Development; Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger, and Agrarian Development.
Codevasf (São Francisco and Parnaíba Valleys Development Company) also participates in the initiative, which will be implemented through two main fronts.
One of them is the implementation of projects in partnership with the states, with the installation of wells for decentralized irrigation, using solar energy to benefit small rural producers.
The other front is the creation of irrigation hubs, focused on modernizing agricultural production in regions with water scarcity.
The program is already being implemented in Rio Grande do Norte and should expand to other priority regions, such as the Northeast and North of the country, where water scarcity is a challenge.
The initiative aims not only to increase productivity, but also to ensure environmental and energy sustainability for family farming production chains.
What are irrigation hubs?
Irrigated agriculture hubs are agricultural clusters where irrigated agriculture is present and which have potential for expansion, considering the availability of water and soil.
They can be large-scale, with the installation of technologies that allow for efficient irrigation of large areas, favoring the cultivation of products such as grains, fruits and vegetables. In addition, they contribute to local economic development, generating more jobs and encouraging the growth of agriculture.

Initiatives like these should be routine at federal, state and municipal levels.
Unfortunately, they are often disregarded, and when implemented, they are used as political campaign tools by groups that dominate many regions throughout Brazil, relegating to the background what should be the main objective of the project.
We have seen several situations where projects with clear possibilities of benefiting society, because they were used in this way, were lost during their implementation or the huge funds allocated to them simply became bargaining chips.
Good evening, excellent news, I suggest that the federal government expand the area of implementation of this technology, since in our saltpeter project in the São Francisco valley in Juazeiro, Bahia; we have water, but the costs of electricity are making agricultural production unfeasible, causing many family farmers to give up the activity!!!
