A supermarket in the center of Pacatuba, located in Fortaleza (CE), was closed on Thursday afternoon (28) due to the risk of the roof collapsing. The suspicion is that the weight of the solar s has overloaded the structure of the establishment, generating an excessive load.
In a statement, Civil Defense reported that, after receiving a report of a partial collapse at the site, its team was immediately called and dispatched to assess the situation.
It was confirmed by the Civil Defense itself that the roof and side wall of the supermarket partially collapsed, which caused a risk of total collapse. No one was injured, as the building had already been evacuated before the incident.
“For safety reasons, the area was isolated and the supermarket was closed, with access prohibited until a full technical assessment was carried out and the necessary repairs were carried out,” Civil Defense informed Canal Solar.
According to Civil Defense, at around 19:50 pm, a team from the Ceará Military Fire Department was sent to carry out a technical inspection at the site and advise those responsible on the emergency measures to be taken.
“After talking to Civil Defense and the Fire Department, the supermarket owners agreed to begin repairs immediately, following safety standards.”
The owner was asked to close the establishment immediately and provide an urgent technical report from the engineer responsible for the planning and construction of the building.
The supermarket spoke out on social media about the incident, stating that it is taking the necessary measures to resolve the structural problems.
“We inform you that due to structural damage, our store will be temporarily closed. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and ensure your safety. We thank you for your understanding.”
A video circulating on social media shows the damage to the supermarket's structure.

Geraldo Silveira, electrical engineer at CS Consulting, comments that every time a photovoltaic system is installed on a roof, regardless of the type, it is essential to consider some points. Among the crucial points is the assessment of the load that will be placed on the structure.
“The ideal is to have a civil or structural engineer analyze the roof’s capacity, because if the load is too great, the structure may not the weight. The essential points are: first, calculate the load that will be installed and check whether the original roof structure is capable of ing it,” he commented.
According to the engineer, if the structure does not have the necessary capacity, structural reinforcement will be necessary. In this case, the engineer will issue an ART (Technical Responsibility Note) and a report, validating the capacity of the structure.
“This professional will determine whether the roof can the weight and, if necessary, indicate reinforcements to ensure safety,” he said.
“Therefore, it is essential that, when carrying out a project on any structure or roof, a technical assessment is carried out. This is necessary because, often, the original structure was not designed to additional loads, such as solar s,” he concluded.

The photo shows that there are approximately 7 tons of photovoltaic systems on the roof of this building. A structural calculation is required to determine whether the roof was designed for this additional load.
