Researchers from Federal Universities in Rio Grande do Sul will present studies on the climate disasters extremes that occurred in Rio Grande do Sul and that have been worsening in the last decade.
The scientific seminar “RS: Resilience and Sustainability” will take place on March 14, starting at 9 am, in the Hall of Acts of the UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul).
The event will be opened by Sara Ahmed, economist and advisor to the V20 – the group of countries most vulnerable to climate change – and an international authority on climate emergencies.
Afterwards, scientists will present reflections on public policies for urban, health and water planning, and models for predicting extreme weather events using IA (Artificial Intelligence), in addition to research that points to the need for more sustainable development policies.
Finally, Inamara Mélo, Director of Policies for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change at the Ministry of the Environment and former Secretary of the Environment of Pernambuco, will speak on the on “Climate Change in Brazil: Perspectives and Public Policies”.
According to Maneco Hassen, executive secretary of sers (Secretariat for for the Reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul), there are several indications that climate change is already interfering in several aspects of people's lives and the economy of Rio Grande do Sul.
For him, scientists need to be called upon to investigate, reflect and speak out, pointing out ways to overcome the potential damages of this new climate reality. “We need to think about this and not be afraid to take the necessary actions to face this problem, always focusing on people and society,” concludes Hassen.
