This Monday (15), Belo Horizonte (MG) hosted the event "Regional Dialogue Y20 Minas Gerais", which promoted a debate on the energy transition fair and sustainable between youth, government representatives and civil society to contribute to the formulation of policies and actions.
The event was attended by Marina Meyer Falcão, president of the OAB/MG Energy Commission, Legal Director of Energy Global Solution and Regulatory Secretary of the INEL (National Institute of Clean Energy), which highlighted the importance of electrification in the energy transition.
“As the energy matrix enters the process of electrification and sectors historically based on fossil fuels, such as transportation, for example, begin to migrate to electrical energy, the electrical energy sector gains even more importance for development socioeconomic e environmental”, evaluated Marina.
The discussion also addressed the need and challenges of reducing carbon emissions. According to the World Energy Statistical Report 2023 da IEA (International Energy AgencyNear 86% of the world's C02 emissions come from burning fossil fuels for the production of energy and materials.
“There is the challenge of ensuring the expansion of the supply of electrical energy with a lower share of fossil fuels, in this regard, it is emphasized that the sources: solar and wind […] According to EPE (Energy Research Company) all renewable sources emit fewer greenhouse gases compared to conventional sources.” pointed out the specialist.
“Reducing social inequality also means reducing the costs of Electric Energy”
Although 99,8% of the Brazilian population has energy coverage, the country is still impacted by energy poverty.
According to a 2023 projection by ABRACE Energia, Brazil has the highest cost of residential electricity in relation to per capita income among the 34 OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries and more than 45% of lower-income households had problems paying the electricity bill.
“Reducing social inequalities also means reducing the costs of Electric Energy, an example of this: INEL included solar energy and law 14.300 in the Minha Casa Minha Vida Program”, mentioned Marina.
